How we build fencing to last
A durable fence starts below ground. Before recommending a system, we assess the fence height, ground conditions, levels, exposure, access and intended boundary.
For many standard domestic fencing installations, posts would normally be set around 600mm, or approximately two feet, into the ground. This is not one fixed rule for every project — the correct depth and foundation size depend on the fencing system, height, soil conditions, wind exposure and manufacturer requirements.
We price for the appropriate installation from the beginning rather than reducing post depth or setting posts only a few inches into the ground to make the quotation appear cheaper.
The fence line is carefully set out, posts are installed plumb, aligned and secure, and panels or boards are fitted straight and true. Suitable treated materials, fixings, gravel boards or kickboards are used where required.
We will also explain whether repairing the existing fence could provide better value than replacing everything.
The aim is not simply for the fence to look right when we leave — it is for it to remain straight, secure and presentable for years.
Fencing questions, answered
How long will a new fence last?
It depends on the material. Treated timber with concreted posts gives a good 15–20 years; composite and metal fencing manufactured from Colorbond® steel can last decades because they don't rot, warp or need painting.
Can you replace just a few panels instead of the whole run?
Yes. We're happy to swap a single panel, a broken post or a damaged section and match it to your existing fence as closely as possible — no need to redo the lot.
Timber, composite or metal — which should I pick?
Timber is the cheapest upfront, composite gives a natural look with no maintenance, and metal is the toughest and longest-lasting. We'll talk you through the trade-offs based on your budget and how exposed the boundary is.
Do you take the old fence away?
Waste removal can be included as part of the quote where required. If included, the old panels, posts and concrete are taken away and the area is left tidy.
