We work right across Monmouthshire from our base in Newport — Chepstow, Caldicot, Magor, Usk, Abergavenny and Monmouth. Bigger plots, more exposed boundaries and more ambitious gardens than we see in town, and the work is priced and built accordingly.
Rural boundaries ask more of a fence
Monmouthshire gardens are a different job to a city terrace. Runs are longer, plots are bigger, and a good many boundaries back straight onto fields, lanes or the open valley. That means wind, and wind is what finds a badly set post.
On exposed boundaries we will usually steer you towards a DuraPost system or metal fencing rather than standard timber posts, simply because the failure point on a rural fence is nearly always at ground level. It is more money on day one, and may offer reduced maintenance and better long-term value, depending on the chosen system.
The gardens out here also tend to be the ones worth doing properly, and we are happy to take on larger patios, decked terraces on sloping ground, sleeper retaining walls and full garden transformations.

Where we work in Monmouthshire
Different parts of the county throw up different problems. Here is what we tend to meet where.
Chepstow
Steep, terraced gardens above the Wye and a lot of older stone boundaries. Level changes are the theme here: retaining walls, stepped patios and raised decking to claw back usable space. Parts of the town are conservation area, so boundary treatment is worth discussing before anything goes up.
Caldicot
Largely post-war and modern estates with regular rectangular plots and long side and rear boundaries. Straightforward runs to price and quick to install, which makes full boundary replacement and matching side gates good value here.
Magor & Undy
Newer developments where the original builder-grade fencing often reaches the end of its life across a whole run at once. Very exposed to wind off the Levels, so this is prime DuraPost and metal fencing territory rather than another set of timber posts.
Usk
Period properties, generous plots and a lot of gardens that deserve a proper scheme rather than a fence. Full transformations, sandstone patios, decked terraces and sleeper beds are common. Conservation constraints apply in the town centre.
Abergavenny
Big gardens, serious slopes and real exposure at the top end of the county. Levelling, terracing and retaining are usually the bulk of the job before any fencing or paving goes down. Worth quoting as a project rather than a line item.
Monmouth
A mix of town gardens and larger rural plots on the edges. Riverside and low-lying gardens need drainage and falls thought about properly, particularly on patios, or you end up with standing water every winter.

Working in Monmouthshire: your questions
Do you charge extra to come out to Monmouthshire?
No call-out charge, and no travel surcharge on the sort of work we normally do out there. Monmouthshire is a short run from our Newport base and we work across it regularly. For very small one-panel repairs at the far end of the county we may suggest batching the visit, and we will say so honestly at quoting rather than after.
Our garden backs onto open fields and the wind destroys fences. What lasts?
Exposed rural boundaries are where post choice matters most. Timber posts are usually the first thing to go. A DuraPost system or metal fencing handles wind far better because the posts flex rather than snap and there is nothing at ground level to rot. It costs more up front and stops the cycle of yearly repairs.
We are in a conservation area. Can you work with that?
Yes. Parts of Chepstow, Usk, Monmouth and Abergavenny have conservation area status or listed properties nearby, and boundary treatments can be restricted. We will talk through what is likely to be acceptable, and where permission is needed we will tell you rather than just putting something up.
Can you handle a big garden on a slope?
Sloping plots usually want a combination of levelling, sleeper or block retaining walls, and either a raised deck or a terraced patio depending on the drop. We will look at the fall across the garden and tell you which is better value.
Do you take on whole garden projects out here, not just fencing?
Yes, and larger projects are exactly what we are set up for. Fencing, gates, decking, patios, paths, sleepers, raised beds, levelling and turfing all under one company, which matters more when you are further from town and do not want four different trades travelling out.
